The purpose of this recognition program is to provide a framework to recognize full-time staff members in Academic Affairs, who have demonstrated exemplary performance while at South Texas College.

Angelica Garcia, Secretary
Dean’s Office, Liberal Arts & Social Sciences
Ms. Angie Garcia has served the Liberal Arts and Social Sciences Division for 12 years with great skill and knowledge of South Texas College’s processes. Working in the LASS Division office requires a great deal of initiative, as new processes and pro-active measures must continuously be implemented to keep things working smoothly. Ms. Garcia excels in this challenging environment.

San Juanita Ruiz, Student Success Specialist
Liberal Arts & Social Sciences
As a loyal member of the Liberal Arts and Social Sciences Division, Ms. Janie Ruiz started her career at South Texas College as a lab assistant. Even then she was always stepping in to help out, no matter what task was needed. She would substitute as a secretary or technician whenever the support staff needed an extra hand. After a few years in the Advising Department, she now serves the Division as a student success specialist. With her strong work ethic, commitment to students, ability to help students graduate, and positive attitude, it is always a pleasure to work with Ms. Ruiz.

Matthew Martinez, Student Success Specialist
Liberal Arts & Social Sciences
Mr. Matthew Martinez has served as the Developmental and Puente Student Success Specialist for several years, during which he has shown great understanding of his job and helped numerous students find the right level of developmental course work. He is devoted to the Liberal Arts and Social Sciences programs and making students successful.  The pleasant and punctual way in which he responds to requests, combined with an in-depth knowledge of South Texas College and its processes make him an outstanding employee.

Yolanda Mercado, Lab Assistant
Computer and Advance Technology
As the lab assistant for the Computer and Advanced Technologies department, Ms. Yolanda Mercado exhibits the high standards that are required in an extremely diverse and richly technical program. She deploys and manages complex robotic labs, cloud computing hardware, and telecommunication trainers in preparation for instructional use with ease. Faculty describe her as resourceful, highly qualified, and indispensable.

Antonio Delgado, Jr. Lab Assistant

Mr. Antonio “Tony” Delgado, Jr., joined the Advanced Manufacturing Department in 2013. His expertise in all areas compliments our faculty. He is a great asset to our students, our labs and our department. He works great with others and is able to communicate with all faculties and staff efficiently. Mr. Delgado has contributed to the department since he was work-study and has continued to strive to make our department a success as a full time lab assistant.

Raquel Lucatero, Staff Secretary
Starr County Campus
Ms. Raquel Lucatero has demonstrated her commitment to South Texas College, as the Staff Secretary at Starr County Campus. She has established policies and procedures for all areas of the Starr County Campus to ensure collaboration and teamwork for timely and accurate delivery for the Campus to run smoothly. Ms. Lucatero’s ability to bridge communication among all entities on Campus has become part of the overall culture of higher education and success at the Starr County Campus. Ms. Lucatero also participates in student organizations both on and off campus, as a way to engage the community.

Sandra Lopez, Faculty Secretary
Mid-Valley Campus
Ms. Sandra Lopez joined the Mid-Valley Campus of South Texas College in 2013, as Faculty Secretary. In addition to her duties, Ms. Lopez has demonstrated a strong commitment to the community as a volunteer at the Evins Juvenile Detention Center, a speaker for “Voice for Youth” on topics ranging from education to suicide prevention, and as an active participant in various other community organizations.

Belinda Diaz, Faculty Secretary
Dean’s Office, Nursing & Allied Health
Ms. Belinda Diaz has been an incredibly efficient and outstandingly effective Program Secretary for four different Nursing and Allied Health programs. Ms. Diaz attends trainings and in-services so she can better address various faculty and student needs. She has outstanding interpersonal skills and interacts easily with students, faculty, and staff. She is an invaluable asset to the Nursing and Allied Health Division and South Texas College.

Nancy Gonzalez, Academic Coach
Math, Science, & Bachelor Programs
Ms. Nancy Gonzalez has been with South Texas College and has held various positions. In 2015, she accepted the Academic Coach for the Bachelor of Applied Science – Organizational Leadership (BAS-OL), where she selflessly works with other members of the team and provides guidance and mentorship to new employees and work-studies. Ms. Gonzalez is genuinely dedicated to students and the overall success of South Texas College. She strives to make a positive difference in the lives of the more than 300 students that form the BAS-OL Program.

Walaa Shaath, Secretary
Math, Science, & Bachelor Programs
Ms. Walaa Shaath is a self-motivated member of the Texas Regional STEM Degree Accelerator (TRSDA) Project, where she serves as the TRSDA Secretary. She is dedicated to the STEM faculty Institute, whether by completing paperwork and reports, or greeting faculty participants with her wonderful smile. It is easy to work with Ms. Shaath as she always has a positive attitude, does her work so thoughtfully, and is determined to complete tasks is matched with a calm and positive demeanor.

Yvette Gonzalez, Project Manager
Office of the Vice President for Academic Affairs
A graduate of the BAT program at STC, Ms. Yvette Gonzalez accepted her current position as a Project Manager position with the Office of the Vice President for Academic Affairs in 2013. She manages projects that require consistent communication with various internal and external stakeholders, as well as gathering and interpreting data for the Vice President. Ms. Gonzalez’s leadership and commitment and to her work, the Division, and the College is exceptional.

Sylvia Bernal, Administrative Assistant
Academic Excellence Office, Academic Advancement Division
Ms. Sylvia Bernal is the Administrative Assistant for the Academic Excellence Office and works with students and staff from the Valley Scholars Program, Phi Theta Kappa Honor Society, and Honors Program. She is committed to student success and works closely with departments to provide Valley Scholars student workers to every campus. With more than 20 years of service, she is always willing to share her knowledge of the College to support coworkers and other departments. Mrs. Bernal is a valuable resource and essential part of the Academic Excellence Office team and South Texas College.

Maria De Leon Elizondo, Early College High School Coordinator
High School Programs & Services, Academic Advancement Area
Ms. Maria Elena De Leon Elizondo has been with South Texas College since 2005 and is currently serving as a Coordinator for Early College High Schools where she has excelled and established an exceptional rapport with the school districts and students in the Early College Programs. She recently assisted a very large, comprehensive high school with creating a system to facilitate advising, scheduling, and registration of more than 400 students in college coursework. Ms. De Leon Elizondo has also taken the initiative to assist in staff development and presents at local, state and national conferences on ECHS Best Practices.
