Transfer FAQs
- What is the process to transfer?
Most transfer institutions only require students to do two things: Complete the ApplyTexas application and submit their transcripts from each institution of higher education attended. Some schools, such as University of Texas at Austin and Texas A&M University, require students to do an application essay; others, such as Texas State University, require students to submit their high school transcripts as well. If you have questions about admissions requirements, please stop by the Transfer Center and we would be glad to assist you!
- Where can I get help with my ApplyTexas Application?
Students are more than welcome to complete their ApplyTexas Application and FAFSA Application in the Transfer Center computer lab in H 105 on the Pecan Campus. There are almost always staff members on hand to answer student questions about applications in the office.
- Where can I get my transcripts?
All of the information that you need to know about getting your transcripts can be found at the South Texas College Admissions Department.
- Why might I need to submit two transcripts?
Institutions usually start with an unofficial transcript so that they can evaluate the courses that you have taken and see how they fit into your degree at that institution. You need to submit your official transcript after the end of your last semester at South Texas College to show that you successfully completed your courses.
- Will all of my courses transfer?
If you are taking courses as part of an Associate of Arts, Associate of Arts in Teaching or Associate of Science, it is likely that most, if not all, of your credits will transfer. Texas Education Code states that if a student takes a core course at any public institution and transfers to another public institution, the institution that is being transferred to must give students core credit for that class. The question will then be of transferability versus applicability, see next question for further explanation. If a student is taking courses as a part of an Associate of Applied Science degree, the fifteen core credits that the student is taking will transfer, however, it is likely that none of the courses in the field of study will transfer. Private colleges tend to be more willing to take technical credits over public institutions.
- What is the difference between Transferability and Applicability?
All South Texas College academic courses are transferable to other public institutions of higher education, however, majors at different institutions may have requirements that students will need to fulfill. For instance, the Criminal Justice at UTRGV states that students can take any mathematics course in the core other than MATH 1332. At South Texas College you can take MATH 1332 to fulfill the core mathematics requirement. So if you majored in Criminal Justice at South Texas College and took MATH 1332 as your math and transferred to UTRGV, you would receive credit for mathematics as part of the core, however the major would require you to take a different mathematics course as MATH 1332 is not allowed.
- What are the minimum requirements to get into UTRGV?
South Texas College students who have a minimum of 24 credit hours and a 2.0 GPA are guaranteed admission into UTRGV, however some programs, such as Education have additional entrance requirements to be admitted to the program. It is possible to be admitted to UTRGV but not get admittance into programs with admissions requirements.
- What is an articulation agreement and why is it important?
Articulation agreements are agreements between two institutions of higher education that dictate how transfer courses will be applied across institutions. It guarantees that if a student takes a course that it will count towards their major at the transfer institution. See Transfer Opportunities for a list and copies of our current articulation agreements.
